THEATRE

Theatre requires a safe space. Growth doesn’t require failure, but it can be impeded by the fear of failure.

Artists need to know that they are in a safe space in which to take risks without fear of the repercussions of failure.

Any artist with a leadership role needs to be held responsible for guaranteeing a safe space and enforcing the policies and procedures of such a space. This requires honesty and open communication with a cast and crew.

If a leader does not have the means to guarantee the physical, mental, and emotional safety of those involved they have an obligation to acknowledge the need for additional support and to communicate this with others.

Artists need to understand what they gain by taking risks, the difference between risk and sacrifice, and what a particular project personally requires of them in order for all involved to succeed.

A leader should be equal parts role model, educator, and protector, and none of these roles should be sacrificed for the sake of art.
